These exceptional 3D impressions of your teeth are created in minutes to provide you with a strong foundation to begin high-quality orthodontic care.
Path to Board Certification
Becoming board-certified by the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) involves several advanced steps beyond state licensure:
1. Advanced Specialty Training
After earning a dental degree, orthodontists must complete an accredited 2-3 year residency focused specifically on orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics.
2. Comprehensive Written Examination
Candidates must pass an extensive written exam administered by the ABO, consisting of 240 questions that cover every aspect of orthodontic theory and practice.
3. Rigorous Clinical and Oral Examinations
Orthodontists then present detailed reports of real patient cases to the board, demonstrating consistent excellence in treatment planning, execution, and results. In addition, they must successfully complete an oral exam, answering questions across a broad spectrum of academic and clinical topics.

Why Board-Certification Matters
Licensed vs. Board-Certified: What’s the Difference?
All orthodontists are required to be licensed. This means they’ve completed dental school, finished a specialized orthodontic residency, and met state requirements to practice orthodontics. Board certification is a voluntary process that demonstrates an orthodontist’s commitment to clinical excellence and mastery of their specialty.
Board-certified orthodontists have undergone additional, comprehensive evaluations to prove their expertise in both academic knowledge and patient care. This means you can trust they are dedicated to delivering care that meets the highest standards of safety, effectiveness, and patient wellness.
