What are Lingual Braces?

The word lingual means “tongue side.” Lingual braces attach to the back of your teeth instead of the front. Aside from being discreet, lingual braces function just like regular braces, correcting the same range of problems (crowding, gaps, overbites, etc.) as typical braces using brackets and wires to apply continuous pressure and gently move teeth into alignment.

However, traditional lingual braces are not without their complications. They can cause tongue and soft tissue discomfort, as the brackets are placed on the inside surfaces of the teeth—areas that frequently come into contact with the tongue during speaking and eating.
