Metal Braces

Pros: Highly durable and effective – can correct almost any orthodontic problem. Generally the most affordable option (and sometimes the fastest). The best part is you can personalize your look with bright ligature colors.

Cons: Most visible type (brackets and wires are noticeable). Initial adjustment can cause soreness, and brackets may irritate cheeks briefly. You must avoid hard or sticky foods to prevent breaking a bracket or bending a wire.

BRACES

Brace yourself!

Braces have been around for a very long time. In fact, Hippocrates (the “father of medicine”) and Aristotle even mentioned straightening teeth around 400 BC. In 1819, French dentist Christophe Delabarre created the first modern “wire crib” appliance, marking the start of contemporary orthodontics.

Today, braces are still the hallmark of orthodontic treatment, and for good reason: they’re incredibly effective, versatile, and time-tested. Unlike removable options like aligners, braces are fixed to the teeth, which means they’re working 24/7 to gently guide teeth into their proper positions. They can handle everything from mild crowding to complex bite problems, making them the go-to option for orthodontists treating kids, teens, and adults alike.

Thanks to continuous innovation, today’s braces are smaller, sleeker, and more comfortable than ever—offering the same reliable results with a much more modern experience.

Ceramic (Clear) Braces

Pros: Blends in with your teeth (clear or tooth-colored brackets) for a subtle look. Still very effective for moving teeth.

Cons: More expensive than metal braces. Ceramic brackets are more fragile and likely to break, so you need to be gentle. Careful cleaning is required to prevent staining and keep them looking clear.

In the end, no single option is “best” for everyone. If you want fast, robust treatment and don’t mind the look, traditional metal braces are a safe bet. If you care a lot about appearance, ceramic braces or clear aligners offer more discreet options. While clear aligners work well for disciplined teens and adults, younger kids often do better with fixed braces.

The most important step is to consult your orthodontist. Dr. Parsaei will evaluate your teeth and recommend the appliance that’s right for you.
